Story First, Format Later: The Golden Rule of Self-Publishing a Children’s Book
By Kezzia Crossley
When you're self-publishing a children's book, it's easy to get pulled into a rabbit hole of formatting specs, print sizes, and publishing platforms. But here's something I always tell indie authors:
Start with the story. Format later.
Your story — its voice, rhythm, emotion, and message — is the heart of your book. The format? That’s the container. And like any good container, it should be built around what’s inside, not the other way around.
Why Story Comes First
Your story determines:
The number of pages
The page turns and pacing
The layout and illustration opportunities
The emotional beats of your book
If you try to write to fit a 32-page template before your idea is fully developed, you risk boxing yourself in too soon. Let the story unfold first — then shape the format to fit.
Let Illustrations Support the Story (Not the Template)
Many indie authors are tempted to start with trim size or panel layouts before the illustrator is even hired. But illustrations thrive when they’re led by the story.
When I illustrate or design a book, I always start by reading the manuscript — not the specs. The emotional arc, the character interactions, the visual beats… these guide everything else. Once we know what’s needed, we choose the format that supports it.
When to Think About Format (Hint: After You’ve Got the Goods)
After your story is solid and edited, that’s when it’s time to think about:
Page count (multiples of 4 or 8)
Trim size (e.g. 8.5x8.5", 8x10", or custom)
Binding type (paperback, hardcover, lay-flat)
Print specs for IngramSpark or KDP
Format becomes a tool — not a constraint. It serves the story, rather than limiting it.
Why This Approach Matters (Especially in Children’s Books)
Children notice rhythm. They feel pauses. They notice when something is off — even if they don’t have the language for it. That’s why children’s books that feel magical are always story-led.
When you prioritize storytelling first, your readers (big and small) can feel it.
The Painted Acorn Approach
At The Painted Acorn, I help indie authors develop and design their books from the inside out — story first, format second. Whether you’re just starting your manuscript or already envisioning your characters, I’m here to make sure the finished product feels as alive as the idea you started with.
Because when the story leads, the magic stays intact.
